Microneedling: Your questions answered

Is Microneedling painful ?

This is one of the questions we are asked the most! We'd describe the sensation as more uncomfortable than painful, although everyone's sensitivity is different. You may feel a prickling or scratching sensation on the skin, with some areas feeling more sensitive than others.

What will my skin look and feel like afterwards?

How your skin looks and feels after treatment will vary for everyone. Immediately afterwards your skin may look pink or red and feel warm, like a mild sunburn. You may also notice a little swelling or dryness . These effects usually settle over the following few days.

How does microneedling work, and how can it benefit my skin?

Microneedling uses a pen with very fine needles to create tiny microchannels in the skin. This encourages the skin’s natural repair process and stimulates collagen and elastin production, helping to support skin firmness and elasticity.

Microneedling can help with a range of skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • The appearance of scars, including acne scars

  • Visible or enlarged pores

  • Uneven pigmentation and signs of sun damage

  • Skin that feels dry or dehydrated

  • Dull, tired-looking skin

  • Uneven skin texture and tone

How many treatments will I need, and how often can I have them?

For most clients, we recommend one treatment a month, with a course of three or six treatments, depending on your skin concerns and the results you’d like to achieve.

For younger clients looking to maintain their skin and address early signs of ageing, a treatment every five to six months may be enough, with other suitable facials in between.

When will I start to see results?

Microneedling works gradually. You may begin to notice improvements within a few weeks, while changes linked to collagen production develop over the following months.

Results vary, and a course may be needed to achieve the improvement you’re looking for.

What aftercare do I need to follow?

Keep your skincare simple and gentle for the first few days, using the recommended cleanser and hydrating serum. Use a clean pillowcase and try not to touch your skin.

For the first 24 hours, leave makeup off and skip hot baths and showers, exercise, swimming, saunas and jacuzzis.

Protect your skin from the sun and apply SPF as directed in your aftercare instructions.

Leave retinol, exfoliating acids (AHAs and BHAs) and skin peels out of your routine for at least 72 hours, and longer if your skin is still sensitive.

Wait at least seven days before having other facial treatments or hair removal on the treated area, and until your skin has fully settled.

If you’d like to know whether Microneedling is right for you, please get in touch or book a consultation. We’ll chat through your skin concerns and answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to seeing you.
